I've really just started this museum journey and I've already seen quite a bit of history about Oklahoma, the US, and the world. One of the things that I enjoyed about the Edmond History Museum was that they are focusing on how history has impacted Edmond and how Edmond impacts history. Who in their town was affected by war? What historic things were thought up in Edmond? The building that they're in is a part of the history of WWII. They're able to bring a world view down to a very focused regional view. I love that!
While I was perusing the exhibits, I had the chance to speak with the museum director, Amy Stephens. She's awesome by the way. She was telling me some of the things that the EHM has accomplished, plans for upcoming exhibits, and some of the things that they do on a regular basis to keep everyone interested in what the museum is up to. One really surprising and totally encouraging fact she told me was that 52% of the museum's attendees are children. That's pretty impressive considering that they're not specifically a children's museum. They have some fantastic kid's areas as you can see in a few pictures below, but those spaces aren't the focus. Kudos to the families for bringing the kids out too. Together, they're teaching kids about the importance of history. I'm all for it!
There are some permanent exhibit spaces, but they also have areas that completely change every four to six months. That's a great way to make sure you and I can come see new things two or three times a year. When I was there, I caught the tail end of the current exhibits. I got to see some rodeo related things in their "This Ain't Our First Rodeo" exhibit which included rodeo awards, displays, and wonderful photographs by Jennifer (Cocoma) Hustis. Also, a few military displays let you see some uniforms, gear, and hometown pilots. The Edmond History Museum's website contains so many things that have been on display or are virtual exhibits, that it's well worth some time to sit down in your PJs and check it out from the comfort of your own home. Last thing, if you're interested and think you may have ties to the history of Edmond, you can check in with the Edmond Genealogical Society to sift through their records and try to track down your family.
So bring your whole family to the Edmond History Museum because there really is something for everyone. And if the kids are still rambunctious, there's a playground next door that you can let them get their energy out. Make a day of it!
