PAULS VALLEY

When I started going to all these museums, I was interested in trains in the sense that I enjoyed seeing them coast by and hearing them wail in the distance. I didn't give much thought to where they were going, where they were coming from, who was on them, or what historical significance they had. That's all changed since I've been to so many train related museums and exhibits. Each of them is similar with respect to train history, but they're all specific to the history of that area. I love that! The latest depot I had the pleasure of touring was the Santa Fe Depot Museum in Pauls Valley.

Much like the other depots I've been to, the building itself is an iconic design meant to be able to get passengers on and off the trains as easily as possible. That makes for an interesting long, stretched out museum. This Santa Fe Depot was packed with great local history as well as national train history. One of the features that I absolutely loved wasn't until the very back of the museum. As you can see in some of the photos below, the wood plank floor and wooden rafters are still intact from an era that has long since passed. I'm kind of a rustic architecture lover so it made my day. It made me think, "I could probably live back here!" I would need to install central heat and air though because I'm kind of a weather wimp. HA! As I toured the museum, I got to see another favorite thing, local history. I saw things from the area about farming, newspapers, sports, schools, military, movies, a great flood, and so much more. It was satisfying for a history nerd like me.

Whether you're specifically going to Pauls Valley for any reason, possibly driving down I-35, or you're looking for a day trip to a new place, you should stop in and see the rail history of the Santa Fe Depot in Pauls Valley. I hope you love it as much as I did.
