EL RENO
While I was visiting the campus of Fort Reno, I discovered that there is a museum dedicated to the U.S. Cavalry. The United States Cavalry Association has set up a two story museum completely full of historically significant artifacts to, as their flyer puts it, History, Heritage, and Horsemanship. And it doesn't disappoint in all of those categories.
When I was living near Grand Lake, I worked on a horse ranch where we stabled horses for people, gave trail rides, and helped neglected horses rehab back to health. Being around those horses enriched my life so much. No matter what level of chaos and anxiety I was going through, those horses didn't care. Their presence, majesty, and companionship made all of my issues seem small. So when I toured this museum dedicated to horses and their caretakers and trainers, I was solidly interested. It brought back memories of standing close to a draft horse in silence while he tried to decide if I was sketchy or not. HA!
As I made my way into the former Officer's Quarters for Fort Reno, I was greeted by Candis Lane who told me about the museum and pointed out a few highlights to look out for. That's always appreciated. Sometimes I get distracted by so many cool things that I miss some obviously great artifacts. This is another instance of old architecture which means there are only stairs to get to the second floor. But if you're able to get up the stairs, the second floor is packed with amazing memorabilia and artifacts. Each room that formerly housed officers and visiting dignitaries, is now filled with displays of military history. Like I said before, I often overlook things so I took my time perusing this great collection.
If you make it to Fort Reno, be sure to start at the Fort Reno Visitors Center and Museum, but you definitely need to head next door to see the US Cavalry Association Museum. And when you're done with both of those, drive around to see the other buildings on your way to the Fort Reno Cemetery. This whole trip to El Reno was really cool for this history nerd. Hopefully you'll get as much out of it as I did. Check out their website below for a calendar of events that are held on the parade ground that are in front of the museum. I know I'll be there again.
