Del City Patriot Park(66)

DEL CITY

If you were to describe Del City, it wouldn't be far off to say that it's a small town inside a big city. Del City has been swallowed up by Oklahoma City surrounding it, but it still maintains a small town feel with it's emphasis on community. I was looking for a history museum that I saw on the OMA's official list, but I was told by the parks manager that I was about a year and a half too late. They had donated everything to other places that may be able to display it and keep it preserved. I understand. It's difficult to maintain a collection, especially when you have a full time job doing other things. But I did get to experience Del City's Patriot Park and Trails.

As you can see in the photo of the City Hall, the park is right off of I-40 near the Sunnylane Road exit. I've driven by it a hundred times on my way to Castle Row Studios(RIP) and I just didn't notice it. I'm usually dodging bad drivers on the highway, so my eyes are on the road. But, now that I know Patriot Park is there, I can tell you about it and now you know it's there too. In the same parking lot as the community center, you can enjoy the park with amazing statues, memorials, displays, and a tank! The Park is also the starting point for an impressive amount of walking trails that meander around the city. If I hadn't been on a schedule that day, I would have explored at least one of them. That just means I get to go back over there and check them out. Maybe I'll see you on a trail! Also, part of the complex has a playground and a community swimming pool so, on a day with nice weather, you could spend a lot of time here. And you should!

The community center is in the process of becoming a better resource for Del City residents. They're busy developing programs for elderly health and fitness, art classes, kids activities, and much more. Finding out what the community needs are and planning a calendar is time consuming, but from what I was told, they are up to the task. So, if you're in Del City, or even close by, take some time to go check out the small town in the big city.
