MUSTANG

Going from town to town and from museum to museum, I've mostly been greeted warmly and felt like I was welcome. This is especially the case when I went over to Mustang to visit the Historical Museum there. I set up a time with Dietra to come take a tour. Like a large number of smaller museums, they are run on volunteer's time and effort. Being considerate of this fact helps you and me navigate our great museums. I'll include all the pertinant information for you to contact them so you can see the museum too. Anyway, not only did Dietra show up to let me in, historical society volunteers George, Kelley, and later, Carol showed up to show me around. It was a history party!

The Mustang Historical Museum is packed with amazing things from Oklahoma's past and specifically, the area surrounding what is now Mustang. From the front door to the back door, there is a maze of rooms that take you through the last 120 years of Mustang and Canadian County. They had photos from the earliest days of the city, like the third picture down, when there wasn't much more than a few buildings to indicate there were settlers around. I can definitely tell that the volunteers that set up the museum had a vision. They've set it up so that every twist and turn reveals something interesting. Since the building has been repurposed for the collection, it was interesting there was a couple of jail cells inside that are still there. I think the door still works so mind your manners while you're visiting. HA!! With cells and everything else, I had to really take my time so that I could notice as much as possible. I'm sure I still missed a few things. All the more reason to go back and take friends with me.

I'm so glad I made a plan to go see the Mustang Historical Museum. It was such an honor to be greeted by all the volunteers and hear stories from each of them and find out about some of their favorite things on display. I was made to feel right at home, I learned a lot, and left with a feeling of historical satisfaction. Go check it out!!
