Have you ever known about something for a really long time and just didn't bother to check it out? Well, that's my experience with the Stafford Air & Space Museum in Weatherford. As I've said before, I would often visit family and friends in Amarillo so I passed through Weatherford all the time. I saw the signs about the museum. I stopped at convenience stores near there. I love outer space. I have a Halloween costume space helmet. WHY HAVE I NOT GONE?! Probably laziness more than anything. But I remedied that recently with a trip to the home of SWOSU. And I found out exactly what I've been missing out on.
When I got to town, I stopped at the Heartland of America Museum first. It was cool! I recommend it to get you prepped to blast off to the Space Museum. The Heartland gave me a card for half off my ticket to the Stafford, but I was so excited to get in to see everything that I forgot to use it. Duh! I passed it to a family walking in as I was leaving. I hope they got to use it. Named for Lt. General Thomas Stafford, the 75,000 square foot Stafford Museum was everything that I hoped it would be. It started aptly with exhibits of the Wright Brothers and their accomplishments. The maze of displays wound through the history of flight and on to the space race and the International Space Station. This space nerd was in heaven. Seeing the clumsy first planes, the sleek modern planes, and the plethora of space related exhibits just made my heart happy. I'm glad I was there by myself so I could geek out on my own time. I don't think my wife or my father-in-law would have survived me standing frozen and starry eyed at every single thing in the place.
You don't have to be as big of an outer space nerd as I am to enjoy the Stafford Air & Space Museum. But if you are, it's the place to be. And it's just off of I-40 so you don't have to stray too far off the highway to see something awesome. I know that now. And, yes, I'm ashamed I waited so long to visit. And now that I've spent an ample amount of time staring gobsmacked at everything, I can take my family for a normal visit. I'll probably still geek out a little bit though. Go see it!!
