The American Pigeon Museum & Library(8)

OKLAHOMA CITY

One day, when I first moved back to Oklahoma City, I was perusing a list of museums. There were the standards that I knew and loved. But when, what to my wondering eyes should appear, The American Pigeon Museum. I'm sorry, the what? Pigeons? Oh, I'm definitely going there ASAP. I sometimes feel bad about dragging my poor wife to places that seem odd or out of the way, but she ended up loving the museum even more than I did. And I love it a lot!!

So what's the big deal about birds that hang out on statues and speckle your car with, well, you know? Well, if you're cool like me and you go to this Museum, you'll find out that the history and present day lives of pigeons is quite remarkable. There are currently more than 300 breeds of pigeons and doves. There are racing pigeons, pigeons that aided soldiers during wars, show pigeons, English Pouters, Egyptian Swifts, and the Oriental Roller. I'm putting a link to the APM website at the bottom so you can see the breeds of pigeons for yourself.

Not only is there artwork, displays, and books about pigeons, there are also actual live pigeons there that you can look at up close. Since my memory is garbage most of the time (I've since bought a notebook to take better notes) I think that they're from the collection of the manager(?) of the museum. Her and her husband have over 200!

What I was hoping for when I went looking for The APM&L was an oddball look at a weird bird that I see everyday. What I came away with was a whole new respect for the owners and breeders of these birds. I learned about these birds being used for the simple hobby of raising them to the birds being used to send secret messages that helped win wars. If you're so inclined, they have events to get better acquainted with pigeons. This Museum is, for me, a prime example of something I didn't know was so cool. Or as they would say, So Coo. And yes, I bought the t-shirt!
